From Playing Small to Unapologetic Presence: The Power of Somatic Safety

November 21, 2024•7 min read

Have you ever felt like you’ve hit a glass ceiling in your life or business? Like no matter how many strategies you implement or how hard you try to mindset your way through, you’re still holding back? I knew that feeling all too well.

For years, I lived with a constant buzzing that I needed to be more. Better. a more “optimized” version of myself. And so, like the little overachiever that I am, I set out to fix the things I thought were broken and keeping me small.

I read the books, set the goals, and worked harder on myself than I ever had on anything else. But the truth was, none of it worked. No matter what I achieved or improved, that feeling of not enough never left me.

Maybe you’ve felt this too?

The endless search for ways to fix yourself is a massive energy leak. What I wish someone had told me sooner is that the reason I didn’t feel good about myself wasn’t because there was something wrong with me. It was because I didn’t feel safe to be fully and apologetically myself.

We are shaped by a culture that measures worth by productivity and rewards us for playing by the rules. We’re taught that to be successful, we have to perform and we have to be perfect while doing so.

These messages teach us that in order to feel good about ourselves chase external markers of worth, hoping they’ll give us the permission to lead unapologetically.

But what if the problem isn’t that you’re not enough? What if the problem is that you don’t feel safe inside yourself to be who you are? That sometimes messy, not-always-perfect woman who is here to make a big impact but you are covered under layers of conditioning that keep you playing small?

When your nervous system is stuck in survival mode (always braced for rejection, criticism, or failure) it’s impossible to show up with sincere and authentic authority. You remain locked in a cycle of believing you need to earn your right to exist in the room. But the foundation for your greatest impact isn’t outside of you. It’s inside.

The real answer isn’t to fix yourself. It’s building the internal safety required to hold your own power. To know you are enough as you are.

the high-Functioning Freeze State

My preferred coping mechanism to avoid rejection, criticism or failure was to stay busy.

There was always another project to finish, another certification to get, another task on the list. I see now that I was avoiding the vulnerability of real expansion.

You might know it. That restless urge to keep going, even when you’re bone-tired. The sense that if you slowed down, even for a moment, you might unravel.

It looks like overcommitting, micromanaging, or scrolling for inspiration when you should be creating. On the surface productive. But inside, it feels like you’re running a race on a treadmill that’s set just a little too fast.

Watch this video about creating space to feel safe within yourself.

At the heart of this endless busyness lies emotional bypassing. A fear of sitting with the raw, potent sensations of being fully alive.

For me, it was the tight knot of anxiety in my stomach that I’d carried for years. It was the feelings of inadequacy that crept in when I wasn’t “doing” enough. It felt safer to keep moving than to sit still and feel.

But (and I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you this) this avoidance comes at a cost.

When we fill every moment with distractions, we cut ourselves off from the very thing we need most. Our somatic authority. Connecting to our truth, and feeling at home in ourselves so that we can live as the most actualised version of ourselves. This avoidance isn’t just mental, it’s deeply rooted in the body, where tension builds and feelings get stuck.

It becomes a cycle, a dog chasing the tail it will never catch.  We avoid the uncomfortable feelings by staying busy, but the more we avoid feeling, the harder it becomes to slow down and feel.

If you’ve been wondering why life feels just a little blah, and things don’t excite you the way they used to, perhaps this will offer you some insight.

We can’t choose which feelings to numb.  When you numb the discomfort of expansion, you also numb your intuition, your pleasure, and your magnetism.

This is where Feminine Embodiment, of which I am a coach, changes the game. By tuning into your body, you build the internal safety needed to stop surviving your life and start leading it.

For a long time, I thought the goal was peace. To finally be regulated and calm. But what I’ve learned is that the path to true impact isn’t about being calm. It’s about becoming honest with yourself, and holding yourself in the vulnerability of that.

Embodiment became my way back to power.

As I became more sensitive to the feelings and sensations in my body, I began to notice what was happening inside.  The tightness in my chest when I wanted to speak up. The folding in of my presence in high-stakes conversations. The weight of that old conditioning that told me it wasn’t safe to be too much. To be seen.

Internal safety isn’t about being comfortable. It’s about being so anchored in yourself that you can handle being UNCOMFORTABLE while doing big things.

1. Build capacity for intensity

When I started exploring my own inner world, I realised my fears about my enoughness has capped me for a long time.

By tuning into the body and noticing where we hold tension, we begin to unravelthat stuck energy. This isn’t about fixing yourself, instead it’s about increasing your bandwidth.

If you want to lead, you must be able to stay present with the heat of growth. Start by noticing your body’s response to small risks. Do you hold your breath? Do your shoulders rise? These are the clues to where your capacity is currently capped.

2. Cultivate Somatic Authority

Every time I ignored my gut feelings or said yes when I wanted to say no, I chipped away at my self-trust and power.

Building somatic authority is a slow, rewarding process of honoring your the wisdom of your body. When you choose to rest because your body demands it, or you speak up because your gut insists, you are making deposits into your internal safety bank.

Over time, these acts of alignment create a foundation of trust so solid that you no longer need external validation. You become your own ultimate authority.

Feminine embodiment is the primary tool I use to help women expand their capacity for impact.

Our bodies hold the blueprints of our power. They also hold the stories of our lives. Those moments of rejection, every time we were told to be smaller, quieter, more professional. These experiences live in your nervous system, dictating how much success you allow yourself to have.

Through this work, we stop looking for permission from external sources and start meeting our expansion with curiosity and confidence. As your internal safety grows, so does your ability to show up as your true, unapologetic self.
