How to Feel Like Yourself Again with Embodied Self-Care

November 22, 2024•7 min read

Do you long to feel like yourself again? Perhaps you’re ticking boxes, and doing what needs to be done, but feeling numb beneath it all. Maybe even feeling like a shadow of the woman you once was.

Maybe it hits you when you’re scrolling your phone at night, endlessly swiping but not taking anything in. Or when you catch yourself in the mirror and wonder, Where did I go?

If you’re here, you’re probably wondering the same thing: how do you feel like yourself again?

The answer isn’t about doing more. It’s not about bubble baths, yoga retreats, or toxic positivity. It’s about coming back to your body, because that’s where your spark lives. When you reconnect with your body, you reconnect with you.

Stress: The Double-Edged Sword

Stress isn’t always the bad guy. In small doses, it sharpens your focus, gives you a burst of energy, and helps you navigate life’s challenges. But when stress overstays its welcome, it drags you into survival mode.  In this state your body is primed to fight, flee, or freeze.

This survival response might have served our ancestors well when faced with a sabretooth tiger, but today, the threats are different. Deadlines, difficult conversations, and constant multitasking trigger the same response. Your body diverts energy away from creativity and connection, flooding your muscles with tension and your mind with overthinking.

The longer you stay in this state, the more disconnected you are from others, but also from yourself. It’s like running on autopilot, accomplishing tasks but losing touch with your spark, your flow, and your aliveness.

Here’s where embodied self-care comes in. It gives you a way to interrupt the stress response, reconnect with your body, and come back to yourself. Dropping into your body and meeting what is there, is the best way to step out of being in constant survival mode (ask me how I know!)

You can find yourself in survival mode for many reasons.

Some of the most stressful events in life include getting married, losing a loved one, starting a new job (or business), moving to a new place, or having a baby.

Or, you could have been exposed to stressful situations over a long period of time. Maybe you struggle with your own sense of self-worth. A biggie that many of my clients struggle with is negative self-talk and beliefs around not being enough.

What Happens When You’re “Dead Below the Neck”

When you’re running on stress and drive alone, life starts to feel flat.  You end up operating from the neck up, and you feel dead below the neck. Even the things you used to enjoy (whether it’s your work, relationships, or hobbies) feel like chores and you zone out during conversations because you have nothing left to give.

You stop noticing the tension in your chest, the way your breath barely reaches your belly. You ignore the ache in your shoulders or the tiredness behind your eyes. Instead, you power through.

At first, it works. You accomplish a lot. But over time, this disconnection takes its toll. You start to feel heavy, uninspired, or stuck in a cycle of overthinking and overdoing.

It’s not that you’re failing or broken. It’s that you have disconnected from the wisdom of your body.

The Self-Care You Actually Need

Here’s the truth: self-care isn’t about bubble baths, massages, or telling yourself to “just think positive.”

Real self-care is about tending to the parts of your emotional, mental, physical, and energetic self that have been left on the back burner.  It’s how you stop feeling overwhelmed.  It’s about reconnecting with the deep truth of you that you can access through your body in a way that brings you back to life.

When you tune into your body, you start to:

  • Notice what you need in the moment (and give yourself permission to honour it).
  • Release tension and emotion that’s been stuck for too long.
  • Reawaken your spark and enter the flow that makes you feel vibrant again.

How to Feel Like Yourself Again: Start Here

Feeling like yourself again doesn’t mean overhauling your life. It starts with small, intentional steps that bring you back to your body, so you can have both mental clarity and emotional resilience.

1. Pause and Check In

Before you do anything else, stop and ask yourself: What am I feeling right now? Where do I feel it in my body?

This isn’t about fixing or analyzing. It’s about noticing. Maybe it’s tightness in your chest or a heaviness in your belly. Stay with it. Let your body show you where you’ve been holding on too tightly.

You can make this part of your routine. For example, check in with yourself while brushing your teeth or waiting for your coffee to brew. Linking it to an existing habit makes it easier to remember until it becomes second nature.

2. Move What’s Stuck

Stress often gets trapped in your body, showing up as tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, or a heaviness in your chest. Movement helps you release it.  But this isn’t about exercise or burning calories. It’s about moving in a way that frees the frozen tension knotting you up on the inside.

  • Put on a song that speaks to you and let your body move however it wants.
  • Shake your hands, your feet, your whole body, like you’re letting go of everything weighing you down.
  • Go for a walk where you bring your awareness into your body, noticing how your body feels with each step.

3. Build Small Rituals to Return to Yourself

Embodied self-care doesn’t have to be elaborate. The goal is to create small rituals that ground you and bring you back to your body.

Start by brainstorming things that help you feel rested, peaceful, or alive. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Journaling your thoughts to clear mental clutter.
  • Drinking a glass of water and noticing how it feels as it moves through your body.
  • Taking a moment to really taste your food, no multitasking allowed.
  • Lying outside and looking for shapes in the clouds (a preschooler-approved activity!)
  • Make some art.
  • Prepare a cup of tea and drink it with intention.

Try any of these and see if you can make it a daily habit.

4.  Say No (to Others and Yourself)

We’ve all heard the advice to set boundaries, but here’s the twist: sometimes, the person you need to say no to is you.

  • Say no to staying up late working when your body is begging for sleep.
  • Say no to skipping meals or scarfing down processed food because you’re “too busy” to eat properly.
  • Say no to pushing through exhaustion instead of resting.

Learning to say no gently and firmly, is one of the most powerful forms of self-care.

Finding balance: How to Feel like Yourself Again

When you reconnect with your body, something happens. You start to feel like yourself again. Not the overworked, overwhelmed, shadow version of you, but the one who feels sensually alive and present to her life.

What is one small step you can take today to get started?
