Whether we feel happy or unhappy in our lives comes mostly from how we perceive our life to be. And it is the response that we have and the reactions we choose from the events that happen to us, with leaves us feeling empowered or not.
We all have the capacity to be more empowered, and here are a few habits that you can develop to help you get there.
#1 Take time out for yourself
Create a “me-time” slot in your day where you can connect with yourself. You can’t take care of others unless you have taken good enough care of yourself first.
#2 Strive for balanced life
A well balanced life looks different for different people. The way to determine what your balanced life looks like, is to decide what your priorities are, to ensure that they are aligned with your values and then living your life according to that guidance.
Live your live through your senses. Get out of your head and into your body. Amplify what you experience. Focus on what you taste, smell, hear, see and feel.
Yes, yes I know. You’re already breathing without thinking about it. But try this: see how great it feels to focus on a conscious breath. Your mind is unable to hold two thoughts at the same time, and by focusing on a single breath you can create a single moment of being in the now.
#5 Be Authentic
The term might be overused, but it still has truth in it. Being authentic – showing who you truly are (to both yourself and others) requires courage and is liberating.
#6 Be clear on your boundaries
We give away our power when we don’t have clear boundaries. This can be driven by our need for approval and the result is that we become resentful and feel that others take advantage of us.
#7 Declutter what you no longer need
Get rid of the stuff that don’t serve you anymore. The things which don’t serve you can be physical or emotional possessions. Give away, sell , or burn the physical possessions you now longer need. Emotional baggage could take a bit longer, but start small and choose to release old hurts, resentments and feelings of helplessness.
If you are a typical overachiever like me, you’d want to try all of these at once. Don’t. No good comes from driving yourself crazy to be happier (I think)! Instead choose only 1 or 2 new habits to start with.
